Club Origins and achievements
Marian Athletic Club, originally Ruan, but renamed Marian in 1954 (The Marian Year), had its origin, along with Tulla AC in the division in 1952 of St. Michael's AC into two smaller clubs. This arrangement took place by mutual agreement and was designed to improve competition in the County. St. Michael's had been mostly a cross-country club catering for all East Clare, but Marian, with its base in Ennis and surrounding area, caters also for track and field athletics.
Over the past 60 years athletes from the club have distinguished themselves in a wide variety of competitions at all levels and several of them have had the honour of representing Ireland in international competition.
The club has a number of major successes to its credit. In 1992 a Clare ladies team consisting mostly of Marian athletes finished third in the inter-county section of the Mazda-sponsored Track and Field League.
In the following year the club competed on its own and was third in Section B of the inter-club section, but in 1994 it won Division 2 and was promoted to Division 1, finishing in fourth place in 1995 and 1996.
The men's team also competed in the Mazda League making it to the finals of Division 2 in 1994 and 1996 and finishing in third place in 1995.
Between 1992 and 1996 inclusive the Ladies Junior cross country team won the All-Ireland championships on three occasions and took the silver medals on two occasions.
In 1997 Marian AC achieved a notable success in winning Munster medals in each of the 19 different events, including the multi-events, adding All-Ireland medals in 12 of these.
Over the past 30 years the club has recorded an impressive total of 43 All-Ireland team successes at all levels with many individual successes as well.
